Dhaka:Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called on the public to remain vigilant against rumours and misinformation circulating on social media, emphasizing that such false narratives can undermine communal harmony.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks during an exchange meeting with Buddhist religious leaders at the Ministry of Home Affairs, held in preparation for the upcoming Prabarana Purnima on October 25 and the month-long Kathin Chibar Dan festival. He reassured the Buddhist community of the government's commitment to maintaining religious harmony and ensuring that all faiths can celebrate their festivals safely.
Ahmed highlighted the importance of verifying information before sharing it, noting that disputes, particularly those related to land or religious institution management, are sometimes misrepresented as communal attacks. He warned that any attempts to disrupt harmony would be firmly addressed, and those involved in illegal activities would face consequences.
Security measures have been intensified at Durga Puja venues, including enhanced surveillance with body-worn cameras, CCTV, and app-based monitoring. Police monitoring cells are actively observing the situation to maintain order. Special vigilance has also been directed in areas with significant Buddhist populations, such as Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, and the hill districts, to ensure peaceful celebrations.
Buddhist religious leaders at the meeting discussed the spiritual importance of Prabarana Purnima, emphasizing self-restraint and purification of the mind, alongside the traditions of lantern flying and Kathin Chibar Dan. They agreed to coordinate with law enforcement by providing a list of Buddhist monasteries across the country.
