Lalmonirhat:A mosque and a temple in the district town of Lalmonirhat share the same compound, serving as a unique testament to Bangladesh's enduring tradition of communal harmony. The Puran Bazar Jame Mosque and the Kalibari Central Temple, located in the Kalibari area, have for generations exemplified religious tolerance.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Kalibari Central Temple was established in 1836. Subsequently, in 1900, a mosque was built beside it by local traders and Muslims, in consultation with the Sanatan community, to accommodate their religious practices. Since then, members of both communities have conducted their religious activities peacefully, showcasing a remarkable example of communal harmony.
The temple and mosque share a courtyard, where sounds of gongs and ululation from the temple coexist harmoniously with the Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer. There are no physical barriers between the two places of worship, allowing for mutual respect and religious freedom. The Sanatan community, currently celebrating Sharodiyo Durga Puja, pauses their activities during the Adhan as a sign of respect for their Muslim neighbors.
Shankar Chakraborty, President and Head Priest of Kalibari Central Temple, emphasized the absence of conflict between the communities over the past century, highlighting the spirit of mutual respect and discipline. Similarly, Amirul Hayat Ahmed Bakul, President of the Puran Bazar Jame Mosque Committee, affirmed the cooperative relationship between the mosque and temple authorities, describing the site as an exemplary model of religious coexistence.
The shared courtyard attracts visitors interested in its history and serves as a national example of religious harmony. Local residents have witnessed generations of peaceful coexistence, with prayers and rituals conducted without disturbances. The site also draws pilgrims and visitors from across the country, moved by its display of unity and peace.
In a world often marked by religious conflicts, the mosque and temple in Lalmonirhat continue to represent a quiet testament to mutual respect and humanity, drawing attention even from foreign ambassadors eager to witness this peaceful coexistence.
