Dhaka:State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam has pledged full financial and logistical support for research on Phuti cotton to ensure the sustainable production and commercial expansion of Dhakai muslin. He emphasized the importance of transferring technology for producing revived muslin to private entrepreneurs efficiently.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shariful Alam highlighted that Dhakai muslin is a unique symbol of Bangladesh's history and textile heritage. The Bangladesh Handloom Board's research, particularly on Phuti cotton varieties, genetic characteristics, and fiber quality, has shown promising developments for sustainable muslin production.

The state minister made these remarks at a seminar titled 'Development of Phuti Cotton Varieties, the Raw Material for Dhakai Muslin Production,' organized by the Bangladesh Handloom Board at the CIRDAP Auditorium. Alam noted the importance of making muslin production technology accessible to private entrepreneurs to expand commercial production through skilled weavers and investors.

He also mentioned that maintaining the fabric's unique quality while creating opportunities for production, marketing, and exports would generate employment, earn foreign currency, and contribute to the national economy. Alam also referenced discussions with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman regarding Phuti cotton and muslin research, which led to directives for maximum support from the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.

Alam reiterated the commitment to preserving muslin's heritage and expanding its market presence domestically and internationally. He acknowledged the role of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in establishing the Bangladesh Handloom Board in 1977, which laid the foundation for the sector's development.

The seminar was attended by dignitaries including Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Bangladesh Handloom Board Chairman Md. Zakir Hossain, and principal researcher Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Abdelmoghny Abdulbaqi from Egypt's Cotton Research Institute, along with other local and international researchers, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
