Dhaka:Science and Technology Secretary Md Anwar Hossain has lauded the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as a historic milestone in ensuring Bangladesh's energy security. He made these remarks while inaugurating a four-week Basic Professional Training Course (BPTC) organized by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the training programme is being conducted in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), BAERA, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and relevant ministries. The secretary highlighted that the plant achieved its first criticality on October 11, 2026, and will soon contribute to the national grid, aiding in meeting the country's electricity demand.
Emphasizing the importance of nuclear safety, Secretary Hossain stressed that generating electricity is not the sole objective. He pointed out that safe operation, effective regulation, and a strong safety culture are of equal importance. Furthermore, he underscored the need to equip young Bangladeshi scientists and engineers with internationally recognized expertise.
He urged trainees to leverage the knowledge and experience of IAEA experts to enhance their professional skills and bolster Bangladesh's standing in international nuclear forums. Speaking as a special guest, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr. Moinul Islam expressed optimism that the training would enable participants to contribute to a safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear energy programme.
BAERA Chairman Mahmudul Hasan presided over the inaugural ceremony, extending gratitude to the IAEA for its support in human resource development. The training, running from October 18 to November 12, will be facilitated by four IAEA technical officers and experts, alongside Bangladeshi scientists and specialists. A total of 40 trainees from BAERA, BAEC, and the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), along with senior officials, are participating in the programme.
