Rajshahi:The Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) is set to install solar power systems in approximately 17,000 irrigation pumps. This initiative aims to modernize the irrigation infrastructure in the Barind region while reducing energy costs.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the project also includes plans to supply surplus electricity to the national grid, introduce a cashless system for online payment of irrigation fees, and manage irrigation pumps through smart technology. A meeting to evaluate these initiatives took place at BMDA's Rajshahi headquarters, involving representatives from various domestic and foreign organizations, including a Chinese technology firm.

During the meeting, representatives discussed the feasibility of supplying solar power to the national grid via net metering technology, mobile payment systems for irrigation fees, and centralized monitoring of pump operations. BMDA Executive Director Jahangir Alam Khan emphasized that the welfare of farmers should be prioritized in developing agriculture and irrigation systems.

The event was attended by representatives from China's Wilfar Information Technology Company Limited and Zhejiang Qibin Technology Company Limited, along with BMDA officials and other stakeholders. Discussions covered the implementation of net metering, smart irrigation technology, and the potential economic benefits of these systems, ensuring that any new technology adopted benefits farmers by reducing costs and improving access to irrigation services.
