Manila:As World Food Day is observed, the focus shifts beyond just having enough food to the importance of understanding what we are eating. The Front of Pack Labelling (FOPL) system aims to address this by providing clear nutrition information on food packages, empowering consumers to make informed choices.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the theme for World Food Day 2026, 'Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,' encourages a reevaluation of the food production, distribution, and consumption systems. In Bangladesh, where affordable but not necessarily nutritious foods like chips and instant noodles are prevalent, understanding nutritional content is crucial for making healthier choices.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 report by five UN agencies highlights that 38.6% of Bangladesh's population could not afford a healthy diet in 2025, with 26.2% experiencing food insecurity. This underscores the need for accessible nutritional information to complement food availability and affordability efforts.

FOPL can play a significant role by prominently displaying easy-to-understand nutrition data on the front of packages, aiding consumers in quickly assessing the sugar, salt, and fat content of foods. This system does not dictate choices but provides the necessary information for more confident decision-making.

Bangladesh is moving towards implementing such a system, with the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority having published draft regulations for packaged food labelling. These regulations are undergoing further consultations before becoming enforceable, emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.

The push for FOPL aligns with the World Food Day call to 'Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,' highlighting the shared responsibility of individuals, the government, the food industry, and society to build a safer and more nutritious food system.
