Accra:A city Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced that the 'National Port Strategy' is being developed with a focus on the nation's economic interests and the expansion of international trade. He emphasized the critical role that efficient port management plays in supporting Bangladesh's import-export activities and overall economic advancement.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these comments as the chief guest at a seminar organized by the Ministry of Shipping at a city hotel. The event was attended by State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan, JICA Bangladesh Office Chief Representative Junko Takahashi, port authority chairmen, ministry representatives, and experts.

The minister highlighted the importance of creating a strategy that does not undermine any specific agency's authority, stressing that the strategy should focus on the broader economic interests of the country. He mentioned that this initiative requires input from all relevant parties, including ministries, port authorities, government agencies, and business stakeholders.

Rabiul underscored the need for an integrated port management strategy, noting that it should have been implemented earlier. With economic growth and trade progress, enhancing port capacities and improving operational systems have become urgent needs. The government is working toward finalizing the strategy with the collaboration of JICA and experts.

He emphasized that the strategy must balance legal obligations and operational scope with mutual cooperation among involved entities. The minister called for vigilance to ensure that the responsibilities of any ministry or agency do not obstruct coordinated initiatives.

Rabiul concluded by stating that the management of sea, river, and land ports involves multiple authorities and entities, making it essential to gather input from all stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes of the national port strategy.
