Dhaka:A court has rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam in a case concerning the alleged suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Biruni Mir made the decision following a hearing. This ruling follows a previous decision on October 7 by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam, who also denied bail to Gazi Nazrul, who had been sent to jail on September 28 after concluding a second remand period.
On September 24, the court placed Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on a four-day remand. His first wife, Maksuda Islam, had been placed on a one-day remand earlier on September 21. Another individual involved, Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on September 23.
Mariam's body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan on September 20 in their apartment. Subsequently, the lawmaker and his first wife were detained for investigation. Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case against Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Obaidur Rahman for allegedly abetting Mariam's suicide.
Case documents reveal that Mariam, who married Gazi Nazrul in June 2026, reportedly faced physical and mental abuse by Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda, which her family claims led to her tragic death.
