Dhaka:The Election Commission has set November 12 as the date for a by-election to fill the reserved women's seat in the 13th Parliament, which became vacant following the resignation of Ferdousy Ahmed Mishti.
According to United News of Bangladesh, an official notification regarding the by-election schedule was issued by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. The timeline outlines that nomination papers must be submitted by October 26, with scrutiny scheduled for October 27, and the deadline for withdrawing candidacy set for November 1.
The seat was previously held by Mishti, who was elected as a lawmaker with a nomination from the BNP. Under the current regulations, only the BNP is eligible to nominate a candidate for this seat. Generally, reserved women's seats see a single candidate, negating the need for voting. However, if more than one candidate is nominated, only lawmakers from the BNP alliance will be eligible to participate in the voting process.
Mishti resigned on October 1 after being instructed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, amid allegations of her involvement in an attack, vandalism, looting, and demolition at the Radda MCH-FP Centre, a maternal and child healthcare facility in Mirpur, Dhaka, on September 24.
