Rangpur:DNA evidence has linked two suspects to the murders of former schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty and his family in Rangpur, according to police reports.
According to United News of Bangladesh, laboratory tests confirmed a 'statistical match' between the DNA of the suspects, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, and DNA found on evidence collected from the crime scene. The items tested included date seeds, bitten cucumber pieces, and cigarette filters.
Earlier forensic tests had detected male DNA on these items, but investigators were initially unable to identify the individuals. The DNA samples from the two suspects were collected at the CID Forensic Lab in Dhaka and matched with the evidence.
The bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were discovered on August 22 in their locked home in Machhuapara, Rangpur city. Within six hours, police arrested Mugdha and Siddhartha as suspects.
The suspects were transferred from Rangpur Central Jail to Dhaka on September 20 for DNA sample collection at the Criminal Investigation Department office. Investigators gathered over 35 pieces of evidence from the scene, including a fruit knife, foil used for Yaba consumption, and various personal items, which were sent for forensic testing.
Police previously reported that the suspects stayed inside the house after the murders, consuming dates and cucumbers. The Detective Branch continues to investigate the case.
