Lalmonirhat:The government has initiated a transformative program to convert government-owned canals and water bodies into sustainable resources through re-excavation, aiming to bolster environmental protection, promote social forestry, and create disaster-resilient livelihoods while generating employment opportunities for ultra-poor families.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief is set to launch a pilot 'Model Canal' program in 20 selected canals across eight divisions. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 2,400 ultra-poor families.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the new program in Lalmonirhat on November 19. Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Asadul Habib Dulu, highlighted that many canals have become silted due to neglect and illegal encroachment, emphasizing the need for this initiative.
As part of the BNP's election manifesto, a comprehensive program to re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals is underway, with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief responsible for 7,000 kilometers. Last fiscal year, 1,200 kilometers were completed.
The 'Model Canal' program aims to utilize canals for more than just drainage, encouraging tree planting along banks, duck and fish farming, and the development of cottage industries. The initiative supports national goals, including planting 25 crore trees, and aims to enhance navigation, livelihoods, and employment opportunities.
The program will adhere to the Environmental Conservation Act and the Water Body Management Policy, ensuring compliance with existing regulations. Aligning with government commitments, the excavation of rivers, streams, and canals will expand irrigation, conserve water resources, and boost agricultural production over the next five years.
