Rajshahi:Pedestrians have regained easy access to the footpath in front of Rajshahi Government Women's College after the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) removed illegal structures in a three-day long drive.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation, which took place from October 6 to October 8, was carried out under the instructions of RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton. The drive covered areas from Darikharbona intersection to Malopara via the college area, as well as Batar Mor and New Market areas.
Previously, shops and temporary structures had forced pedestrians, including students, women, and elderly people, to walk on the busy road, increasing the risk of accidents and causing traffic disruptions. Following the eviction, local residents, students, and drivers reported that pedestrian movement had eased and road pressure had decreased. They urged authorities to prevent further encroachment.
Shariful Islam, a local resident, noted that the footpath had become usable again after a long time. College student Sanjida Khatun expressed relief, stating that she could now walk to and from the college more easily.
RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton emphasized that ensuring safe and unhindered movement for city dwellers is one of the corporation's responsibilities. He stated that the removal of illegal structures from roads and footpaths would continue in different areas of the city, with regular monitoring to prevent re-encroachment.
