Dhaka:Authorities have recently evicted the IG Gate Colony slum in Shyampur, a known hub for illegal drug trading, as stated by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Cell.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the special eviction drive was conducted by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) with assistance from Shyampur Model Thana Police between September 26 and September 28, 2026. The area had been plagued by an organized syndicate running both open and covert drug operations, disrupting local life and posing risks to nearby educational institutions.
The police had been conducting anti-drug drives and intelligence surveillance to protect students and maintain law and order. Based on specific intelligence, they identified drug hotspots and initiated the drive to dismantle the illegal trade hub. Between 2025 and September 2026, 29 drug-related cases and two cases over police attacks were filed in the IG Gate area, with 251 mobile court drives leading to prison sentences for 389 individuals.
Akhtar Hossain, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations), noted that local residents, teachers, and parents have expressed relief and welcomed the police initiative.
