Dhaka:Bangladesh Bank has instructed National Bank PLC to ensure sufficient cash supply across all its branches and ATM booths beginning October 15, 2026, to allow depositors to withdraw funds as needed.
According to United News of Bangladesh, this directive was issued during a meeting on Thursday involving Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostaqur Rahman, National Bank PLC Chairman Prof. Dr. Melita Mehjabeen, and Acting Managing Director Jahidul Haq at the central bank headquarters.
Bangladesh Bank Spokesperson Arif Hussain Khan stated that the Governor stressed the importance of meeting depositors' cash withdrawal requirements. Khan added that if National Bank encounters any difficulties, including cash shortages, the central bank will provide support.
A press release from the central bank noted that Governor Mostaqur Rahman acknowledged the liquidity issues and withdrawal demands at National Bank. He instructed the bank's management to take necessary actions to safeguard depositors' interests, maintain public trust, and ensure smooth banking operations.
National Bank Chairman Prof. Dr. Melita Mehjabeen reported to the Governor that the central bank's recent interventions have aided in reinstating good governance within the bank. She also mentioned that positive changes in senior management have been implemented to enhance the bank's operational efficiency and performance.
The meeting was also attended by Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governors Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, Dr. Md. Kabir Ahammad, Md. Sarwar Hossain, and Md. Anisur Rahman.
