Dhaka:The government has mandated the use of Bangla QR for issuing and renewing licenses for retail business establishments and merchants nationwide.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Local Government Division, part of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, has instructed relevant authorities to take necessary actions to implement this requirement.

This directive follows a communication from Bangladesh Bank dated September 1, 2026, which addresses the introduction and expansion of Bangla QR-based transactions. The directive specifies that the availability of Bangla QR payment facilities is a condition for the issuance and renewal of licenses for retail businesses.

The Local Government Division has disseminated this directive to the chief executive officers of all city corporations, municipality administrators, and district deputy commissioners, urging them to instruct relevant authorities and ensure compliance.

This initiative aims to accelerate the country's shift towards a cashless economy by expanding digital payment options for retailers, small businesses, and merchants. Bangla QR is designed to enable interoperable digital payments through a single QR code, allowing customers to pay using participating mobile financial services, banks, and payment applications.

The government's efforts are expected to further formalize retail businesses, increase transaction transparency, and reduce reliance on cash. The directive emphasizes that authorities must take necessary measures following Bangladesh Bank's instructions to ensure the decision's proper implementation.
