Dhaka:A court today refused the bail plea of Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, the lawmaker for Satkhira-4, who is implicated in a case concerning the alleged abetment of his second wife, Mariam Khatun, to commit suicide.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam made the decision following a hearing. Gazi Nazrul was previously sent to jail on September 28 after completing his second round of remand.
On September 24, Magistrate Ripon Hossain had placed Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on a new four-day remand. His first wife, Maksuda Islam, was also remanded for a day on September 21, while another accused, Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on September 23.
The police discovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan in Flat No. 203, Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, on the evening of September 20. Following this, the lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody.
Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, lodged the case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting the suicide.
As per case documents, Mariam, aged 19, married MP Gazi Nazrul in June 2026, allegedly under the "direct instigation" of Obaidur Rahman. She had been residing with Nazrul and Maksuda at the mentioned flat, where she reportedly suffered physical and mental abuse by both Nazrul and Maksuda over various issues since their marriage.
