Dhaka:Minister of Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare, Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, announced that the government is committed to eliminating street children and beggars in Bangladesh within the next four years. His comments were made at a seminar titled '50 Years in Children's Dreams: Experiences in Achievements and the Bangladesh of Tomorrow', held in celebration of Children's Rights Day 2026 and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Shishu Academy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Zahid highlighted the ongoing efforts by various departments under the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to support child development. A dedicated wing for street children exists within the ministry, and steps are being taken to enhance its effectiveness. The minister stressed that while educational opportunities are important, equal emphasis must be placed on the mental, social, and cultural development of underprivileged children.

He mentioned the government's goal to unify all children under the Bangladesh Shishu Academy's initiatives. Collaborative efforts are being made by different departments and the academy to ensure comprehensive child development. Dr Zahid emphasized creating an inclusive environment where no child feels marginalized and stressed the importance of equal training, education, and development opportunities for all children.

The minister expressed a wish for the term 'marginalised population' to become obsolete in the future. He called for a livable Bangladesh for everyone, irrespective of religion, caste, ethnicity, or geographical origin. Dr Zahid urged a societal commitment to child safety, emphasizing the need to prevent child abuse and violence and to raise community awareness and involvement.

He concluded by stating that ensuring a safe environment for children is a shared responsibility of all citizens, not just the ministry or Shishu Academy. He called on everyone to contribute to building a Bangladesh that provides a safe and supportive environment for people of all ages. The seminar was attended by several notable figures, including Selima Rahman, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and other distinguished guests.
