Three Siblings Sentenced to Death, 10 Others Receive Life for Mymensingh Farmer’s Murder

Mymensingh:A court in Mymensingh has sentenced three siblings to death and ten others to life imprisonment for the murder of a farmer in 2015, following a land dispute.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the verdict was delivered by Judge Shamsuddin Ahmed of the Mymensingh Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1. The individuals facing the death penalty are Mozammel Haque Swapan Mia, 46, Apon Mia, 43, and Ripon Mia, 41, all sons of Abu Bakar Siddique from Char Laxmidia in Nandail upazila. Ripon Mia was tried in absentia.

The ten individuals sentenced to life imprisonment include Abu Bakar Siddique, 71, his son Kanchon Mia, 36, along with Rubel, 56, Pervez, 31, Mofazzal Hossain, 56, Kashid, 59, Al Amin, 31, Sumon Mia, 36, Noyon Mia, 29, and Ashadul, 29, the latter also tried in absentia. Each convicted person was fined Tk 50,000, with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment if they default on payment.

The prosecution outlined that the conflict stemmed from enmity over land between the convicts and Shafiqul Islam Sobi, son of Hazrat Ali, in Char Bholamari area. On February 25, 2015, the convicts attacked and killed Shafiqul with local weapons while he was at a shop.

Following the incident, Rafiqul Islam, the victim's brother, filed a case at Nandail Police Station against 13 identified individuals and 10-12 unidentified persons. The police later submitted a chargesheet against the 13 accused.
