Dhaka:The BMU Super Specialized Hospital is on track to become fully operational within the next two to three months. Authorities plan to implement a one-stop emergency service model akin to those found in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth and Thailand's Bumrungrad International hospitals.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the hospital will be managed as a private limited company designed to enhance specialized healthcare accessibility and effectiveness through public-private sector collaboration. A new board of directors will be established, and appointed staff will be prohibited from engaging in private practice.

Hospital Director Professor Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi expressed optimism about the hospital's operational timeline. Under the proposed management structure, the BMU Vice-Chancellor will chair the company, and a pro-vice-chancellor will likely be appointed as managing director. A seasoned individual from outside the university will be recruited as the CEO.

Support services such as security and cleaning will be outsourced to capable organizations through competitive tenders. The hospital will hire qualified doctors, nurses, and other personnel on a contractual basis via competitive examinations, as existing BMU medical staff will not be employed there.

Potential restrictions on private practice for hospital doctors are under consideration, with plans to offer competitive salaries and financial benefits in return. BMU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md Abul Kalam Azad mentioned that the CEO's appointment would follow an upcoming syndicate meeting scheduled for October 8.

BMU will retain a 90 percent ownership stake in the private limited company, with the government owning the remaining 10 percent. This corporate setup aims to ensure administrative and financial autonomy, facilitating the recruitment of qualified medical professionals.

The hospital is expected to reduce the necessity for patients to seek specialized treatment abroad. The Bangladesh Medical University (Second Amendment) Bill, 2026, passed in July, supports the management of the hospital and the expansion of medical education, research, and healthcare services.

Featuring five specialized centers and comprehensive facilities, including a 750-bed capacity, the hospital was inaugurated in September 2022 at a cost of Taka 1,868 crore. Until now, it has operated with limited services using BMU's existing staff and budget, as dedicated personnel have yet to be appointed.
