Mirpur:Shariful Islam, a long-time resident of Mirpur, experienced an emotional moment as he walked along the newly cleared footpath at Mirpur-10 with his family. For years, footpaths had been occupied by illegal vendors, making simple walks with his wife and children difficult.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the recent clearing of these footpaths has provided relief to thousands of Mirpur residents, including students, parents, and elderly people. The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) conducted an eviction drive on September 30, targeting illegal stalls on roads like Mirpur-10 and Hope School Road.

Before the eviction, makeshift markets occupied much of the road space, causing severe congestion and forcing pedestrians onto the streets. DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan mentioned that the initiative would be extended across the entire north city area. He emphasized that footpaths would remain clear and those who obstruct them would face penalties.

Traffic conditions have improved significantly. Traffic Sergeant Abdul Aziz noted that the roads are now clearer, and the pressure on traffic management has decreased. The change has been welcomed by students and teachers. Dhaka University student Sheikh Ahona reported that her commute to the metro rail station is now quicker and less crowded.

Parents have expressed relief at being able to walk safely with their children. Established businesses have also benefited, with cleaner surroundings and a return of customers. Shahjahan, a seller at Shah Ali Plaza, appreciated the cleaner environment, while drivers have reported reduced travel times through the area.

Pedestrians like Shahidul Islam have noticed significant time savings in their daily commutes. City residents hope this improvement will be maintained and replicated throughout Dhaka, ensuring footpaths remain safe and accessible for all pedestrians.
