Rohingya Crisis Poses Security Risks Beyond Humanitarian Concerns

Dhaka:The ongoing Rohingya crisis has escalated beyond a humanitarian issue, encompassing broader security and irregular migration challenges, according to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir. He emphasized the need for stronger international efforts to facilitate the dignified return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the State Minister made these comments during a meeting with a delegation led by Apsana Begum MP, Chair of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh, at the Ministry. The delegation included Shockat Adam MP and Lord Qurban Hussain, Member of the House of Lords.

The State Minister welcomed the delegation's interest in enhancing Bangladesh-UK relations and highlighted the UK government's support for Bangladesh's democratic reforms. He also sought the APPG's assistance in engaging more effectively with the UK Parliament to convey Bangladesh's progress and current realities.

The delegation plans to visit the Rohingya camps to assess the situation firsthand. They affirmed their commitment to advocate for the Rohingya community in various international forums, including the UK Parliament, to ensure ongoing humanitarian support and promote the community's sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

Discussions during the meeting also touched on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and exchanges between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. Other topics of mutual interest included democratic consolidation, trade and investment, migration, skills mobilization, and human rights. Both sides expressed a desire to continue cooperation on regional and global issues through bilateral and multilateral channels.
