Dhaka:Road Transport Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced on Tuesday that a new policy is being developed to regulate battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka. This policy aims to control their movement on major roads and in important areas to prevent disruption in the city's functionality.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister made these remarks during the inauguration of the re-excavation work of Dhanmondi Lake. Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam was also present at the event.

Rabiul acknowledged the importance of reaching a collective agreement to mitigate any difficulties that might arise for those who have long been involved in this profession. He emphasized that uncontrolled operation of auto-rickshaws hampers the city's functionality.

In response to comments made by Jamaat leader Golam Parwar, Rabiul criticized the opposition's understanding of citizens' rights and the needs of Dhaka, attributing their political stance to a lack of awareness of public expectations.

Regarding the renovation of Dhanmondi Lake, Rabiul mentioned that it would be equipped with modern facilities, including greenery, to enhance the environment. The Prime Minister had approved two projects worth Tk 83 crore, expected to take around two and a half years to complete.

Additionally, Rabiul highlighted a separate Tk 350 crore project to address waterlogging issues in Dhaka South, especially during the monsoon. This project covers areas such as Dhanmondi, Hazaribagh, Chawkbazar, and Kalabagan, aiming to improve citizens' quality of life.
