July Warriors Demand Recognition and Legal Protections

Dhaka:Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban: Injured participants and representatives of the families of martyrs from the July uprising urged constitutional recognition for the mass movement, along with legal protection and rehabilitation for those wounded during the events.

According to United News of Bangladesh, these demands were presented at the sixth meeting of the Special Committee on Constitutional Amendment. This meeting was held in the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Committee Chairman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed presiding.

Over 60 representatives of the families of martyrs and injured participants attended the meeting, sharing their views and proposals. They suggested integrating the July Declaration and the uprising's spirit into the Constitution, providing immunity for July warriors, addressing legal challenges they face, and expediting trials related to genocide and crimes against humanity during the uprising.

Proposals also included constitutional changes such as a referendum on judiciary, Election Commission, and caretaker government system reforms to strengthen democratic institutions. The importance of ensuring a safe, discrimination-free environment for women in politics, recognizing their role in the uprising, was emphasized.

The committee agreed to consider these proposals, as stated in a press release from the Parliament Secretariat. It invited the submission of additional written proposals on constitutional amendments for review.

Committee members present included Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, State Minister for Planning Md Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Md Nurul Haque, and Shakila Farzana.
