Dhaka:The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has established specific vending zones for hawkers and warned that those who return to unauthorized roads or footpaths will face confiscation of their goods and potential legal action, Administrator Abdus Salam announced on Monday.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Abdus Salam made these remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting the area in front of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He emphasized that hawkers would not be allowed on any road except during Friday-Saturday holiday markets, which have been designated on certain roads.
The DSCC has conducted several meetings with leaders of major hawker organizations before finalizing these arrangements. While some footpaths with sufficient width will allow hawkers, Salam stressed that this permission does not extend to all footpaths.
The corporation's goal is to enhance Dhaka's environment while ensuring that hawkers can maintain their livelihoods by using only the designated spaces. Salam stressed that the DSCC does not intend to evict anyone but warned of strict enforcement if hawkers do not comply.
To facilitate hawkers, a holiday market has been arranged near Pirjangi Mazar, and space has been allocated on the footpath opposite Ideal School on non-market days. The DSCC administrator urged hawker leaders to uphold their commitments, aiming for cooperative implementation rather than enforcement through force.
Additionally, the DSCC is conducting a 12-day survey on the dengue situation, with plans to launch a crash program on dengue prevention based on the survey results.
