President Urges United Efforts for Ethnic Minority Development

Dhaka:President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for united efforts to ensure the development, rights, and dignity of ethnic minority communities in the country.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the President made this appeal during a meeting with a delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Ethnic Minority Party, led by its president Mrigen Hagidok, at Bangabhaban. The delegation informed the President about various issues faced by ethnic minority communities related to their development.

The President acknowledged the government's sincere efforts to address the challenges faced by ethnic minorities residing in both the hills and plains. He encouraged the minority communities to take more initiative for their rights and development, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual cooperation. "If you take one step forward, I will take two steps forward for you," he assured.

He stressed the need to identify the problems and potentials of ethnic minorities and to undertake realistic projects for their development. Addressing land-related issues, the President urged all to remain vigilant and united to protect their rights, and to maintain communication with local administrations to resolve these problems.

Referring to an incident involving the cutting of betel plants at a Khasi Punji in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, he described it as extremely unfortunate and promised an impartial investigation with necessary actions against those responsible.

The President also highlighted the importance of providing educational opportunities, improving education quality, and promoting cultural and social activities for ethnic minorities. He expressed a positive response to arranging a cultural program at Bangabhaban for the upcoming Pahela Baishakh, with participation from ethnic minority representatives.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Saching Prue, Prime Minister's Special Assistant Bijon Kanti Sarkar, and general secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Ethnic Minority Party Shishir Deo, among others. The President's Military Secretary and Secretary were also present.
