Dhaka:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined a discussion on Monday to commemorate World Habitat Day 2026, with a focus on universal housing and sustainable urbanisation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the event was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. The theme for this year's observance is 'Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanisation.'
Before attending the programme, Prime Minister Rahman planted a Swarna Champa on the conference centre's premises. The event also saw the participation of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmad Sohel Manzur, and ministry secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, among others.
To mark the occasion, a three-day housing fair has been set up in the lobby of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre. The fair features 157 stalls showcasing products and services from the housing and construction sectors, as well as banking services and exhibits from RAJUK, the Department of Architecture, and the Public Works Department, among other agencies under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the fair following the discussion programme.
Additionally, a seminar on planned urbanisation and sustainable housing is scheduled to be held at the conference centre at 2:30 pm. World Habitat Day is being observed throughout all divisions and districts of Bangladesh with various activities, including the publication of a souvenir, special discussions on television and radio, and the display of banners, posters, and festoons at key locations.
Since 1986, World Habitat Day has been celebrated in Bangladesh and many other countries worldwide.
