Dongguan:Researchers have unveiled a cutting-edge wireless charging system for new energy vehicles (NEVs) that boasts a remarkable power conversion efficiency of more than 98 percent. This system represents a significant advancement towards the broader adoption of autonomous vehicles and has potential applications in various fields such as rail transport, industrial robots, and low-altitude aircraft.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the collaboration involved researchers from the Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology in Guangdong Province, under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), along with the City University of Hong Kong, the University of Cambridge, and the CAS Institute of Physics. Together, they developed a 20-kW-class wireless charging system using nanocrystalline alloys, achieving an impressive conversion efficiency of 98.51 percent.

The research, published in Nature Communications, highlights a magnetic core structure designed like an overpass, capable of withstanding high temperatures during prolonged wireless charging. The innovative magnetic core strip is 440 mm long, 330 mm wide, and only 4 mm thick, offering a higher power density while being about half as thick as traditional ferrite-based solutions.

The Dongguan institute is focused on enhancing the system's efficiency for industrial applications, with potential uses extending beyond autonomous vehicles to include rail transit, automated guided vehicles in factories, and low-altitude aircraft.

In a related development, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with eight other government departments, announced a five-year plan targeting the intelligent connected NEV industry from 2026 to 2030. The plan envisions large-scale deployment of autonomous-driving vehicles in China by 2030, with advanced automated driving capabilities on highways, urban expressways, and select urban roads.
