Dhaka:The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal has lodged an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, seeking the death penalty for Hasanul Haq Inu, President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and former Information Minister. Inu was previously sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for his role in crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising.

According to United News of Bangladesh, ICT Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed that the appeal was filed with the Appellate Division on Monday. The appeal challenges the 10-year sentence handed down by ICT-2 on June 30, which included concurrent sentences on three charges.

The tribunal's judgment found Inu guilty of serious injury, torture, and persecution of victims, including Raisul Haque, on political grounds. He was also fined Tk 100,000 on two charges and convicted of conspiracy, instigation, and aiding and abetting crimes against humanity.

Inu was acquitted of five other charges, as they were not proved. However, the prosecution's appeal seeks to increase Inu's sentence to death for the charges on which he was convicted, as well as for the charges on which he was acquitted. The Appellate Division will now consider the appeal.
