Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir emphasized that Bangladesh's foreign policy should prioritize national interest by fostering strong international partnerships while maintaining strategic autonomy and avoiding dependency. Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation at Hotel Sonargaon, he stated that Bangladesh seeks cooperation without dependency.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir elaborated that Bangladesh's foreign policy must safeguard national interests, including security and economic opportunities, and adapt to the rapid changes in global power dynamics and technological advancements. He stressed that Bangladesh's approach involves engaging with countries based on mutual respect and benefit.
Kobir highlighted the importance of not choosing sides in international relations but rather focusing on what serves Bangladesh's national interest. He noted that the Bay of Bengal's strategic location offers opportunities for economic and geopolitical engagement, emphasizing peace and cooperation in the region.
Economic diplomacy, he stated, should become a core part of Bangladesh's foreign policy, aiming to open markets, attract investment, and promote Bangladeshi products. He also addressed the need for regional cooperation in South Asia to enhance trade, energy collaboration, and people-to-people contacts.
Kobir identified non-traditional security challenges, such as cybersecurity and climate change, as areas requiring cross-border cooperation. He pointed out the ongoing Rohingya crisis as a significant security and foreign policy issue, advocating for a resolution through international support and dialogue.
In conclusion, Kobir outlined four principles for Bangladesh's foreign policy: national interest, strategic autonomy, expanded partnerships, and peace, emphasizing the need for Bangladesh to be an influential player on the global stage.
