Indian High Commission Celebrates Gandhi Jayanti in Dhaka

Dhaka:The 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was commemorated at the High Commission of India in Dhaka on Friday with a program emphasizing his principles of truth, non-violence, and selfless service. According to United News of Bangladesh, the event was organized by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission. It began with poster-making and quiz competitions for university and college students from across Dhaka, led by renowned Bangladeshi quiz master Ferdous Bappy, focusing on Gandhi's life, ideas, and legacy. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi addressed attendees, recalling Gandhi's enduring message and the continuing relevance of his ideals in contemporary society. The competitions concluded with the closing ceremony of Seva Pakhwada 2026, featuring a multi-faith prayer by children and floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. The cultural program included songs associated with Gandhi, such as 'Vaishnava Jana To', 'Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ashe', 'Raghupati Raghav a', and Rabindra Sangeet, performed by Bangladeshi musicians from Gitimalika. A Khadi presentation by Bishworang, led by Bangladeshi designer Biplob Saha, followed by a folk-fusion musical performance by Krishnapaksha, a youth band from Dhaka University, added to the event's highlights. Khadi stalls by Friendship (Nodi Ltd.) and Prodip Kanti Saha of Comilla Khadi Ghor were displayed, along with artefacts from the Gandhi Ashrams of Noakhali and Jamalpur. The event saw attendance from members of the Indian community in Bangladesh, dignitaries from both nations, representatives of cultural institutions, different faith communities, and students from across Dhaka.
