Dhaka:The United States has donated 500,000 dengue NS1 rapid diagnostic test kits to Bangladesh to aid in the country's dengue detection and treatment efforts.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the test kits were provided through the STRIDES programme, which is funded by the US government. The handover took place at Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital, where US Charge d'Affaires to Bangladesh Trishita Maula presented the kits to Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain.

During the event, Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain instructed relevant authorities to distribute the dengue test kits across Bangladesh efficiently. He mentioned that while the ceremony was held at Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital for logistical reasons, all kits would be stored at the Central Medical Stores Depot. The Directorate General of Health Services will then distribute them to various district and upazila hospitals as needed.

The health minister assured that, in addition to the newly received kits, the government already possesses sufficient stocks of dengue antigen test kits and intravenous saline, ensuring readiness to manage potential increases in dengue cases.

Minister Sakhawat also touched on the government's considerations for introducing a dengue vaccine in Bangladesh. He highlighted the importance of verifying the vaccine's efficacy and safety due to its high cost and ongoing discussions with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Gavi. A decision will be made following international guidelines.

The event was attended by Additional Secretary of the Health Services Division Md Rafiqul Islam, Additional Director General of the DGHS Professor Dr Md Zahid Raihan, Director of Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital Brigadier General Md Saydur Rahman, along with senior officials from the US Embassy and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
