Dhaka:The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Defence has recommended that Bangladesh modernize its armed forces by replacing outdated machinery and equipment with advanced defense systems. The recommendations were made during the committee's first meeting, which took place at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, chaired by Md Ashraf Uddin.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the committee also emphasized the importance of ensuring that postings within the armed forces are based on merit, efficiency, and competence. The meeting included a preliminary review of the activities of 25 departments and agencies under the Ministry of Defence, with presentations on the modernisation activities of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force.
During his welcome speech, Chairman Md Ashraf Uddin paid tribute to the members of the armed forces who have sacrificed their lives in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, United Nations peacekeeping missions, and other assignments. He acknowledged the armed forces' significant role in safeguarding Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty. Md Ashraf Uddin also highlighted the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and late Begum Khaleda Zia in modernizing and strengthening the armed forces.
The chairman further outlined various initiatives by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman aimed at enhancing the country's defense system and the capabilities of the armed forces. Additionally, the committee was informed about a 'Save Energy, Save Money' plan adopted for infrastructure projects by the Bangladesh Army.
The meeting was attended by committee members including Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Whip Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu, SM Zilany, Abdus Salam Azad, Reza Ahammed, Lutfur Rahman, and Md Abdul Baten. High-ranking officials from the Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
