Faridpur:A man and his mother have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Faridpur court for the murder of his wife, Sumi Akter, in 2011.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Faridpur District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Badiuzzaman delivered the verdict against Atier Rahman Talukdar, 28, and his mother Rahela Begum, 50. Both are residents of Keshrail village in Boalmari upazila. In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 on each, with an additional year of imprisonment should they fail to pay.
The prosecution revealed that Atier married Sumi Akter in 2010. Following their marriage, Sumi reportedly faced ongoing abuse from her husband and in-laws due to family disputes. She eventually sought refuge at her father's house. Despite these issues, Sumi's family encouraged her to reconcile, and she returned to her in-laws' home in Keshrail, where the abuse reportedly continued.
Tragically, on May 11, 2011, local mosque imam Abujar Molla informed Sumi's brother, Sarwar Molla, of her death. A case was subsequently filed at Boalmari Police Station. Police apprehended Khalilur Rahman Talukdar, 55, and Rahela Begum at the scene, while Atier initially evaded capture.
After reviewing the case records and witness testimonies, the court acquitted Khalilur Rahman of the charges due to insufficient evidence against him.
