Dhaka:European envoys have pledged to enhance cooperation with the government of Bangladesh following a meeting with President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the meeting included EU Ambassador Michael Miller and ambassadors from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. The envoys congratulated President Mirza Fakhrul on his new role and expressed their commitment to deepening mutual trust and partnership.
President Mirza Fakhrul expressed satisfaction with the progress in relations between Bangladesh, European countries, and the EU, noting the partnership's multifaceted nature. He acknowledged the EU's contributions to Bangladesh's development and democratic transition and highlighted new opportunities to fortify these ties.
He called for increased European investment, emphasizing the investment potential within Bangladesh's democratic environment. On migration, the President reiterated Bangladesh's dedication to preventing irregular migration and human trafficking while advocating for expanded legal migration pathways for skilled workers through the Talent Partnership initiative.
Discussion topics included cooperation in trade, governance, climate action, and sustainable development. The envoys stressed the importance of creating a level playing field for trade and investment and confirmed their support for Bangladesh's reform initiatives in various sectors.
The President also sought continued EU humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya community and urged European nations to facilitate their safe return to Myanmar. The ambassadors reaffirmed their support in addressing this issue.
The meeting covered regional and global developments, renewable energy, green transition, migration management, education, maritime affairs, and technology transfer. Both parties committed to upholding shared values such as democracy, human rights, and international law, with a focus on collaboration in multilateral forums.
The EU ambassadors reiterated their dedication to strengthening the partnership with Bangladesh, while the President assured continued cooperation.
