Dhaka:The Cabinet has given its final approval to a draft ordinance that mandates taxpayers to submit VAT returns within 15 days after the end of each tax period, rather than every three tax periods. This approval is pending vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the draft Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The proposal seeks to amend section 64 of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, aiming to enhance revenue collection efficiency.
The proposed changes require VAT returns to be submitted within 15 days of the end of each tax period. If the deadline falls on a public holiday, submissions can be made the next working day. Additionally, certain taxpayers, including government, semi-government, autonomous bodies, banks, insurance companies, and those with zero returns, will have 20 days to submit their returns.
The Cabinet also passed a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for his leadership during Bangladesh's participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. His involvement in the assembly was described as a historic event for the country.
Prime Minister Rahman addressed the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2026, continuing a family legacy of representation at the UN, following his father and mother's previous addresses in 1980 and 1993, respectively. During his visit, the Prime Minister engaged in 32 international programs and meetings, highlighting Bangladesh's global commitments and expanding international cooperation.
The Cabinet extended its congratulations to Prime Minister Rahman and the Bangladesh delegation for their efforts and representation at the international level.
