Thakurgaon:Six candidates, including two from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and one from Jamaat-e-Islami, have submitted their nomination papers for the upcoming Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary by-election scheduled for November 29.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the candidates filed their nominations before the deadline, as confirmed by returning officer and Thakurgaon district election officer Md Kamrul Islam in a report to the Election Commission Secretariat. The Thakurgaon-1 seat became vacant following the election of Mirza Fakhrul Islam as the country's 23rd president.
The BNP has nominated Mirza Faysal Amin, the younger brother of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Obaidullah Masum, while Jamaat-e-Islami's candidate is Delowar Hossain. Other candidates include Md Khademul Islam from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Md Abdul Aleem Nizami from Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, and Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruque from Bangladesh Congress.
The nomination papers are set to be scrutinized on September 29, with the final date for candidate withdrawal being October 7. Voting will take place on October 29, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin stated that the by-election would be conducted commendably, similar to the previous national election held on February 12. He assured that necessary measures, including the deployment of law enforcement personnel, have been put in place to ensure a fair election process.
The monitoring cell at Nirbachan Bhaban will oversee the by-election in real time, akin to its operations during the 13th parliamentary election, to ensure timely interventions if necessary.
