Dhaka:The Election Commission (EC) is considering starting the Union Parishad (UP) elections from January next year, as annual school examinations in November and December preclude holding the polls during those months.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker mentioned that once the examinations are completed by December, the elections could commence from January. He made these remarks in response to reporters' inquiries at the Nirbachan Bhaban.
Previously, the EC had planned to hold the UP elections in seven phases, beginning on November 12. However, at a meeting on September 17 with representatives from various ministries and agencies, it was suggested that conducting elections in November and December would not be feasible.
The Election Commission intends to continue discussions before finalizing the election schedule. Anwarul dismissed claims that the delay was due to government pressure, affirming that the commission operates independently and in accordance with the law and the Constitution.
He emphasized that announcing specific dates prior to finalizing the election schedule would be inappropriate, and reiterated the importance of not disrupting school examinations, ensuring students can participate without hindrance.
