New York:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined a high-level side event at the United Nations Headquarters, focusing on the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the event, titled 'The Rohingya Crisis A Renewed Call for a Durable Solution from Protracted Displacement, with Justice and Accountability,' included representatives from approximately eight countries. The meeting commenced at around 11:20 a.m. New York time.
Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin confirmed Tarique Rahman's participation and mentioned that he would deliver a significant speech addressing the crisis. The discussion aims to maintain international attention on the issue, identify the root causes of human rights violations, and exert pressure on Myanmar to facilitate the safe return of the Rohingyas.
Trkiye and Kuwait are present at the event, representing the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), respectively. The Prime Minister is expected to underscore Bangladesh's humanitarian efforts in hosting over 1.2 million Rohingyas and advocate for their safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.
Additionally, Tarique Rahman is anticipated to call for enhanced international support to foster conditions conducive to the Rohingyas' return and ensure justice and accountability.
