Dhaka: Health officials today reported a concerning surge in dengue cases, with 1,593 new infections and six fatalities recorded in the past 24 hours. The figures underscore the ongoing struggle Bangladesh faces in controlling the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) provided a detailed breakdown of the new cases. In Barishal division, 154 patients were hospitalized, while Chattogram division saw 167 new hospitalizations. Dhaka division recorded 384 cases, with an additional 132 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 171 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas. Khulna division reported 292 cases, Mymensingh division had 82, Rajshahi division saw 137, Rangpur division reported 65, and Sylhet division had nine new cases.
Since the onset of the dengue outbreak this year, Bangladesh has reported a total of 184 deaths and 61,972 infections. These figures reflect a significant public health challenge, although they are lower than last year's statistics, which saw 413 deaths and 102,861 infections. Projections for 2024 indicate a potential rise in cases, with 575 deaths and 101,214 infections anticipated if current trends continue.
Health authorities are urging citizens to take preventive measures to curb the spread of dengue, emphasizing the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites and seeking timely medical attention.
