Thakurgaon: The first Community Policing Kabaddi Championship-2026 concluded at Thakurgaon today with a call to encourage young people to participate in sports and stay away from drugs, juvenile crime, and other social vices. The closing ceremony and prize distribution programme were held at Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Community Policing wing of Thakurgaon district police organised the tournament under the slogan, "Say No to Drugs, Eliminate Juvenile Gangs, Build a Healthy and Strong Life." The event was presided over by Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Md. Belal Hossain, with Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Rafiqul Haque in attendance as the chief guest.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Khodadad Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md. Alamgir Rahman, and other senior police officials were also present. Teams from different police stations of the district participated in the championship, showcasing their skills and dedication to the traditional sport.
After a series of competitive matches, the Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station team emerged as champions, while the Baliadangi Police Station team claimed the runners-up position. The guests subsequently handed over trophies and prizes to the players of the champion and runner-up teams, celebrating their achievements and efforts.
The organisers pointed out that kabaddi, once a popular rural sport, has gradually lost its appeal among young people amid the growing popularity of technology-based entertainment. They emphasised that the championship was organised to revive interest in kabaddi and encourage the youth to return to sports grounds.
They expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire young people to engage in positive activities, while also strengthening communication and mutual trust between police and the community. The championship is expected to promote traditional kabaddi, provide opportunities for healthy recreation, and enhance public participation in preventing social crimes.
