Jashore: All deep and shallow irrigation pumps across the country will gradually be converted to solar-powered systems and operated using renewable energy, enabling farmers to irrigate their land at affordable costs despite electricity shortages and high diesel prices. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit today announced this initiative while addressing a courtyard meeting in the Nadiar Mor, Barmanpara, and Chanchra areas of Jashore Sadar to discuss the Prime Minister's priority programmes.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was jointly organized by the Jashore Sadar Upazila administration and the District Information Office. During the meeting, Amit highlighted the challenges Bangladesh faces in electricity generation due to the necessity of importing gas and coal. He explained that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to a significant rise in international gas prices, which have surged from US$8-9 per unit to US$28, causing temporary problems in electricity generation.
The government, as Amit outlined, is prioritizing renewable energy as a sustainable solution to these issues. Initiatives are underway to harness sunlight, wind, and water for electricity generation, alongside efforts to generate solar power from the rooftops of government and private buildings.
Amit acknowledged the difficulties farmers face during the irrigation season due to escalating diesel prices and electricity shortages, which contribute to higher production costs. In response, the government has decided to convert all electricity- and diesel-powered irrigation pumps into solar-powered pumps. This transition has already been implemented in Lebutala Union of Jashore Sadar, where a solar-powered pump can irrigate 50 to 60 bighas of farmland.
In the first phase, approximately 36,000 irrigation pumps across the country, including those under the Barind project, have been identified for conversion to solar power, with the work now commencing. Amit also stated that the government will secure necessary funding from its own budget or seek foreign assistance.
Jashore Zila Parishad Administrator Delwar Hossain Khan Khokon, along with elected local representatives and administrative officials, attended the meeting. The gathering also covered discussions on the government's development activities, the Prime Minister's announced priority programmes, and other significant local issues.
