Dhaka: Police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of a 73-year-old woman in Madhabdi upazila of Narsingdi. The arrestees were identified as Hridoy Mia, 27, Qadir Mia, 27, and Abu Mia, 26, all residents of Sarpanaigarh village under Meherpara union.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Ashikur Rahman confirmed the arrest at a press briefing at Madhabdi Police Station this afternoon. The victim, Jahanara Begum, was reportedly hacked to death while offering prayers on the veranda of her home in Sarpanaigarh village at around 7:45 pm on July 30. The assailants allegedly fled with her gold chain after committing the murder.
The victim's son, Mohammad Ismail Mia, subsequently filed a murder case with Madhabdi Police Station. Police stated that Abu Mia was produced before a court today, where he made a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The other two suspects had been sent to court earlier and are currently remanded in jail custody.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fugitives involved in the case and to recover the stolen gold chain.
