Dhaka: Detective Branch (DB) has arrested two alleged members of a snatching gang in connection with the death of headmistress Ronjila Parvin, 56, who fell from a moving rickshaw after being dragged by a snatcher on Manik Mia Avenue. The arrestees are Md Khokon, 35, and Md Rajib Matubbar, 36. Police also recovered the motorcycle allegedly used in the snatching, along with the victim's stolen bag and mobile phone.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Additional Police Commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam made the disclosure at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Mintoo Road in the capital. He said the two suspects were arrested during separate drives in Dhaka, Savar, and Mirpur following analysis of CCTV footage and technological data.
Police reports reveal that Ronjila Parvin was travelling by rickshaw with her husband on the road beside the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on the morning of August 29. After crossing Gate No. 12 at the eastern end of Manik Mia Avenue and reaching the road towards Khejur Bagan, Khokon and Rajib allegedly followed them on a motorcycle. When they reached Khejur Bagan, Khokon, riding pillion, allegedly grabbed the victim's bag and pulled it forcefully.
She fell onto the road from the moving rickshaw and sustained serious head injuries. She was later taken to hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her husband, Md Abdul Matin, 53, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Following the incident, the DB's Tejgaon Division launched a shadow investigation alongside the police station. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage, collected information, and conducted technical analysis to identify those involved. Based on information provided by the arrested suspects, police later recovered the victim's stolen bag from the Boro Bagh area of Mirpur and her mobile phone from the Cooperative Market in Mirpur-1.
The motorcycle allegedly used in the incident was seized from Dewan Para in Bhashantek based on information provided by Rajib. Police also recovered 622 yaba tablets from Rajib's possession. During preliminary interrogation, the two arrested suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement in the snatching and the subsequent death. Legal proceedings against them are underway.
