Dhaka: The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has successfully arrested Sohel Rana, a death-row convict who made a daring escape from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail on August 6, 2024. The escape occurred during a period of chaos resulting from the nationwide unrest following the July uprising.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Sohel Rana, aged 38, was sentenced to death in 2019 for the brutal murder of his 20-year-old neighbor, Md Zahir. The heinous crime involved not only the murder but also the dismemberment of Zahir's body, which was subsequently disposed of in six different locations.
The arrest was announced by SRB-4 Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Hafizur Rahman during a press conference held at the SRB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Wednesday. He informed the media that an SRB-4 team successfully apprehended Rana in Azimpur, located in Singair upazila of Manikganj, on Tuesday evening.
The court in Manikganj had sentenced Rana to death for his gruesome crime in 2019, resulting in his incarceration at Kashimpur High Security Central Jail. However, taking advantage of the unrest, Rana managed to escape by damaging the jail infrastructure and injuring several guards during the breakout.
