Rangpur: As part of rehabilitation and assistance to families affected by road accidents, grant cheques worth Taka 2.16 crore were distributed to 64 families of the deceased and injured in Rangpur today. Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan distributed the cheques provided by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) as the chief guest at a function organized at her conference room in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the distribution of cheques included Tk five lakh each to the families of 30 deceased victims, Tk one lakh each to 18 seriously injured individuals, and Tk three lakh each to 16 victims who were injured in accidents and unable to return to a normal life. The event was attended by Assistant Director of BRTA at Rangpur office Engineer Md Shafiqul Alam Sarkar, leaders of Rangpur District Road Transport and District Bus Owners Association, and members of the deceased and injured families.
BRTA Assistant Director Shafiqul Alam Sarkar mentioned that the BRTA has been regularly distributing financial assistance cheques in response to applications submitted by the families of those killed or injured in road accidents. He noted that most recipients were the primary breadwinners of their families before falling victim to these accidents, with many losing their lives or becoming bedridden after losing limbs. Their families are currently facing significant challenges.
"This financial assistance is being provided so that they can use it as capital to restore their family's financial stability," he stated.
Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan acknowledged the irreparable loss suffered when a family member is killed or injured in a road accident. She emphasized that, despite the severity of the loss, the fund has been provided to help each affected family become self-reliant as part of a humanitarian initiative undertaken by the government. The government hopes that this financial assistance will enable each family to achieve self-reliance by investing the funds or launching business ventures.
She further stressed the importance of adhering to traffic laws, driving responsibly, and playing an active role in ensuring road safety to prevent accidents.
