Feni: Six families, including the family of a martyred Jubo Dal leader and five families whose homes were destroyed in an arson attack, today received keys for newly built houses under an initiative of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the houses were handed over through 'Amra BNP Paribar', to the family of Shaheed Md Harunur Rashid, a Feni Jubo Dal leader who was killed in police firing, and five families whose houses were burnt down in Chauddagram of Cumilla.
The keys were handed over at separate programmes at Bhorbazar in Farhadnagar union of Feni Sadar upazila and Sonapur village in Batisha union of Chauddagram upazila. BNP Acting Secretary General and Chief Adviser of 'Amra BNP Paribar' Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi handed over the keys on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
In Feni, Rizvi handed over the key of the newly built house to the family of Harunur Rashid and provided them with financial assistance. He later visited the martyr's grave. Adviser to 'Amra BNP Paribar' Engineer Md. Ashraf Uddin Bakul MP, its Member Secretary Agriculturist Md Moksedul Momin Mithun and other members of the organisation were present.
Lawmaker Professor Joynal Abedin, Rafiqul Alam Majnu and Rehana Akhter Ranu, Feni District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid Bahar, Member Secretary Alauddin Alal and leaders of central, district and upazila BNP and its affiliated organisations also attended the event.
Harunur Rashid, a Jubo Dal leader, was killed in police firing on December 4, 2013, during a peaceful procession in Feni town in support of a hartal. In 2017, Tarique Rahman also provided the wedding expenses of Harunur Rashid's elder daughter through 'Amra BNP Paribar'.
Meanwhile, five families in Sonapur village of Chauddagram had their houses completely burnt down in an arson attack on April 4 this year after they voted for BNP's 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol in the national election. The families lost their homes and essential belongings and were left in severe hardship following the incident.
After a video depicting their plight circulated on social media, the issue came to Tarique Rahman's attention. He directed 'Amra BNP Paribar' to stand by the affected families, following which new houses were constructed for them.
