Dhaka: The water level of the Padma River in Chapainawabganj fell by 6 centimetres in the 24 hours to 6:00 am on Sunday, but the overall flood situation in the district has not improved significantly. Low-lying areas of five unions in Sadar and Shibganj upazilas remain inundated, leaving several thousand people affected by the flooding. Meanwhile, water levels in the district's other two major rivers, the Mahananda and the Punarbhaba, rose further.
According to United News of Bangladesh, data from the Chapainawabganj office of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB) indicates that the Padma water level fell by 6 centimetres over the past 24 hours and was flowing 32 centimetres below the danger level as of Sunday morning. The Mahananda rose by 3 centimetres and was flowing 1.02 metres below the danger level, while the Punarbhaba rose by 4 centimetres and was flowing 1.98 metres below the danger level.
WDB Executive Engineer SM Ahsan Habib stated that the flood situation is expected to start improving after remaining at the current level for another three days. Earlier, some low-lying areas in Narayanpur and Alatuli unions of Sadar upazila and Panka, Durlabhpur and Ujirpur unions of Shibganj upazila were inundated due to the rise in water levels of the three rivers following an onrush of water from the upstream, leaving around 4,350 families waterlogged.
