Narsingdi: The bodies of three people were recovered today, a day after four individuals went missing while bathing in the Shitalakshya River in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deceased have been identified as Md Obaidullah, 38, from Bhangal village in Kaliganj, Gazipur; Shanta, 16, from Phulbaria village in Kapasia; and Sourav, 18, from Shibpur. The tragic incident unfolded on Friday afternoon when the three drowned during a recreational swim following a visit to a relative's house. Additionally, another person went missing in an attempt to rescue them.
Islam Khan, a leader of the Shibpur Fire Service, stated that a diving team from Bhairab successfully recovered the bodies on Saturday morning. However, the search for Md Shanto, 24, from Tangail, who remains missing, continues.
Police, fire service officials, and local residents reported that the incident took place around 4:30 pm on Friday near Lakhpur village in Dulalpur union. The visitors had been at the home of Majnu Mia before joining family members for a swim in the river. The strong current of the river reportedly swept away Sourav as he tried to save the others, who were struggling due to their inability to swim.
Locals initiated a search after being alerted, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Fire service personnel soon took over the search operation, which was halted at nightfall and resumed the next morning with the arrival of the Bhairab diving team that located the three bodies.
Rescue operations continue to find the still-missing Shanto, 15. Mohammad Kohinur Mia, the officer-in-charge of Shibpur Police Station, indicated that legal actions would be considered after consulting with the families of the deceased once the rescue operation concludes.
