Rajshahi: Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu highlighted the significant contributions of New Govt Degree College, Rajshahi as he addressed the inauguration of the registration programme for the reunion of the Dhaka-based HSC Alumni Association. The event took place at Hare Road in the capital, with Culture Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury attending as a special guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Land Minister emphasized the college's role in shaping many distinguished personalities who are playing pivotal roles in national development both domestically and internationally. He mentioned notable alumni such as former Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Salahuddin, an Air Vice Marshal of the Bangladesh Air Force, government secretaries, senior officials, and leading business figures.
The institution has consistently produced students with exceptional results in HSC examinations, with many securing top positions on merit lists. The minister also spoke about the government's initiatives to enhance the education system, prevent student dropouts, and support economically disadvantaged students.
In his speech, Minu paid tribute to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her contributions to women's education and the expansion of the education sector in Bangladesh. He mentioned that the college is approaching its 60th anniversary, which will be celebrated with a large-scale event featuring former students from across the globe.
Plans for renovating the college's aging auditorium were also announced, aiming to provide better facilities for future events. The programme was presided over by Principal Professor Dr. Shikha Sarker, with Rajshahi-3 lawmaker and chief patron of the alumni association Advocate Mohammad Shafiqul Haque Milon delivering the welcome address. The reunion is scheduled to take place on December 26.
