Savar: Eight more suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Special Branch (SB) sub-inspector in Savar, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) announced on Monday.
According to United News of Bangladesh, four of the suspects were apprehended by RAB-10 from the Munshiganj launch terminal area, while the remaining four were detained by RAB-4 in Aminbazar, Savar. The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Alauddin, Apon, Jihad, Imran, Nur Mohammad Rudra, Rakib Mia, Sabbir Ahmed, and Md Wasim.
RAB-10 Commanding Officer Additional DIG Md Asaduzzaman shared these details during a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre located at Karwan Bazar. Previously, police had already arrested Jahirul, identified as the primary suspect in the case.
The incident involved the murder of SB SI Altaf Hossain, aged 58, who was beaten to death in the Bordeshi area of Aminbazar on August 5. The attack occurred between approximately 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. after Altaf protested against the assault of an auto-rickshaw garage owner by a private car driver and his associates. Following an argument, Altaf identified himself as a police officer, which provoked further aggression from the assailants.
In an attempt to escape, Altaf sought refuge in a garment factory owned by his son, Ariful. The attackers pursued him, gathered additional accomplices, and forcibly entered the factory premises. They assaulted Altaf and his son with local weapons and sticks, causing significant injuries, and vandalized machinery and furniture within the factory.
Local residents eventually rescued the injured duo and transported them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where Altaf was declared deceased by medical personnel. Altaf’s wife subsequently filed a murder case with the Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 individuals and several unidentified others as suspects.
RAB official Asaduzzaman revealed that one of the arrested, Apon, is a ringleader of a juvenile gang and involved in drug supply, with three pending cases against him at various police stations. RAB’s investigation found that Apon struck SI Altaf on the head with an SS pipe, while Jihad inflicted severe injuries using a knife.
Addressing questions from journalists, the RAB official stated that the incident was isolated and confirmed that all accused were under the influence of drugs during the attack.
